Yesterday I took Violet for her first set of immunizations. Dr. Pannozzo informed me she likely wouldn't cry for the first shot, but he had never met a baby that didn't cry for the second one. She had her DPTP (diptheria, pertussis, tetanus and polio), HIB (haemophilus, meningitis and epi-glottitis) and Prevnar (Pneumococcal infection)shots. She did cry for the second shot, but only for about 5 seconds. On the other hand, I welled when he was getting ready, a few tears fell on her face as I was trying to smile before the first shot. She looked right at Dr. Pannozzo and gave him a huge smile and he said "I am sure you won't be smiling at me after this"
She was such a cutie pie. After the first shot, she looked back at me, not smiling but not upset, then came the next one. No tears like she normally gets right away, just a few yelps. Then it was over.
Last night I was talking with Candace about how her kids were with the shots. Violet had an off day. She slept a lot and didn't eat too much. Every time she awoke I put her on to get some milk. She always drank but not for too long. Then she would look around a little and then back to sleep. Candace said she just watched her kiddies for fever and signs of fever after the shots. She gave them Tylenol before each shot too. Well, I didn't give Vi Tylenol because the doctor had told me she may not need it for these first shots. So now I am putting things together wondering if she might have a fever and is trying to sleep it off. Enter thermometer. Up until now, I always used the axilla for the temperature reading, but it made me nervous that I wasn't getting an accurate reading...enter first rectal thermometer reading. There is nothing nice about doing this to your pretty little baby for the first time. I was nervous it would bother her, hurt her, make her poop all over...she was totally fine. Talked to Andrew the whole time. Temperature was fine. I set my alarm for 3 hours and checked again. Fine. What a little trooper.
I suspect that is not the last time mommy will cry more than Violet about something...

Violet is 9 weeks old!
Well, mommy was reprimanded for not posting about our little Violet so here goes...
Violet is truly our little angel. But somehow I feel like we are constantly waiting for the halo to drop.
She is starting to have trouble getting to sleep. Andrew and I don't really understand why kiddies fight the sleep when they are ridiculously tired but we have witnessed it will all of our neices and nefews. Last night Andrew cuddled her until she was almost there and put then put her down, I guess we should try to stop with the cradle to sleep but she is only 9 weeks! Violet is still in the bassinet, I think Andrew is ready for her to get into her crib but I am not there yet. I still like to listen for her breathing and get her up before she cries for food. She has the cutest wake-up routine, lots of grunts and shifting in her swaddle, long before she cries.
Violet has been smiling at us for about 3 weeks now. It likely started as mimicing but now she really smiling at us, when she focuses on the face we often get a huge grin. Can't wait for the giggles. Is there anything better than hearing the giggle of a child?
Braeden and Sadie are in love with Violet. When I see them (which is often right now because I hang out there when I go into Waterloo) they insist on seeing Violet. Especially Sadie. She loves to look at Violet and touch and kiss her. And the cutest thing is that Violet always has a smile for Braeden. Seriously, always. Too cute.
Violet has started to coo and goo at us. It is so much fun to sit with her and 'talk' about her day. She has said a number of a-goos and goos. She really looks like she is trying to communicate with you. I love it. When granny (marn's mom) sings to her, it seems like Violet is trying to sing along. Her favorite song right now is 'You are my Sunshine'. Granny sings it to her all the time.

Just a quick post....
If this is what November brings us in terms of weather, then what are we in for come January?! This is crazy. I don't remember there being this much snow and cold this early in the year. I believe last year we had one big blast of snow which then melted and stayed away until early January (and then came with vengeance). This year seems different. If you went outside right now, you'd swear it was the middle of Jan. It's bitterly cold, icy and lots of snow that looks like it's been there for months. Some parts of Ontario are expected to receive 45cm of snow today. Yes, 45 cm (1.5 FEET)!! It might make it up to +1 Celsius today, if we're lucky. For over a week it's been well below freezing already, and this weekend is primed to be super-cold. This sucks... I hate the winter. bah!
Our new neighbours across the road busted out their snow blower this morning. It was funny cause it was barely spitting out enough snow to make it worth his while. It's their first house, and he's young and - just a guess here - it's the first time he's used it! Much too eager for me. I refuse to shovel before January unless there's at least 8 inches of the crap. It'll likely warm up and melt anyway, so why expend the energy?
Marn and I decided to equip both of our vehicles with Winter tires this year. Mine were desperately needed, and while she had decent All Season's with about half the tread on them still, we felt we should probably put winter tires on hers as well. Carrying precious cargo, y'know? It was a slightly unexpected $2000 blow to the budget right before Christmas (slightly because we had planned for my tires only). So sadly it's going to be a low-key Christmas as far as gift giving goes this year. Violet is too young to know any different, and we already have quite a lot of stuff for her, thanks to Candace and Dave! Next year will be big. ;) Or if the Boxing Day sales are too good to pass up, maybe then.
I discovered a new band today (new for me, because it looks like they've been around for a while), called The Weepies. As the name might suggest, it's a folky-pop band, female lead singer. Pretty mellow, nice for a rainy day music. Or if you're in Ontario, a cold and snowy November day.

It's a really slow day at work this afternoon. This morning nobody's email worked and it took me 1.5 hours to fix. But since then, dead.
This helps me warm up through the cold:

Sunday Shower for Violet
Marnie's sister and Mom held a baby shower for Violet on the weekend (not a surprise shower). It was a lot of fun -- it was meant to be a "drop-in" for a few hours, but most people stayed the entire time. They spent the entire day cleaning up the house in part for the party, and partly because Nancy and Drew are moving into their new house today! They actually got the keys on Monday, but the move is going on right now.
It's going to be so nice for them (and Candace and Dave) to finally get some space and get back into a routine as it's been mayhem since May (!!) when they moved in.
I might take tomorrow off to help them settle in the place and move boxes and furniture around for them. They did hire mover's, though, so most of the furniture should be in the spot that they want. I might also be contracted to install and connect their central vac since I have all the experience now! (It really is pretty easy to do, and I offered to do it...).
Marnie and I went to the new house last weekend before it was finished, and it looked great. It's so nice! It's going to take a long time for it to feel like home to them again, like any new place, but they are really excited about it. If there was one draw-back, it's the backyard and lack of privacy/space that they had at the old house. I think that's going to be the big "downer" to it... they could have spent *only* another $80k to back on to forest on the other side of the lane to get that, though! (includes walk-out basement and deck off the kitchen also). Anyway, these places look really nice, and they really hit a niche in the market as they sold out in record time. I think they were lucky to get in when they did as they've already made money on them (if they hate it and want to sell). Phase 2 has started which is already 90% sold... The biggest plus for them is, all maintenance is done - no shovelling, mowing or gardening, but you can if you want to. The condo fee's cover that which is what the big attraction to these places were.
Anyway, we're really excited for them and Dave and Cand. It's been a LONG time coming! I'll try and get some photo's soon.
At the other house, they have big plans for reno's as well. They aren't sure just what yet or in what order, but they want to redo the kitchen and open it up/expand it a bit. They want to divide the main bathroom upstairs; it's currently a cheater ensuite, so they're hoping to make it a true ensuite, with small main bath for the kids. And the family room downstairs they want to redo. So, I have a feeling that house will be caos for a while yet as these projects will likely take a couple of years to finish.

shed
I forgot to mention that I am nearly finished the shed now. I have everything done except one door. I'm not sure that I'll get to that this year, though. It's a double-door that I have to make. On the other side of the shed is a single door that is pre-fab and made of metal, so that was easy to put in. This one, I have to make from scratch and I'm running out of time, good weather and daylight. So, I might just board it up for the winter and start it in the spring. The only other parts I have to make are the step for the single door, and ramp for the double door. It looks pretty good! I'll load some pics of it soon.

Mom hosted a surprise shower for Marn and Violet on Sunday, and I was able to keep it a surprise. Marn had no idea. She thought we were going for an early dinner/late lunch because Teresa and Branko were in town. A perfect cover! Violet did great (I was told) as she was passed around all afternoon without a peep. I went into work to pull some network cable through the ceiling that needed to be done, and brought Branko with me to help which was great.
Later on just before we were getting ready to leave, Marn noticed that the toilets weren't flushing, so she went to find a plunger downstairs. The toilet was overflowing, filling up the whole laundry room and spilling out into the carpet and bedroom area. It wasn't draining like it should have. So after helping clean that up with Tony's wet/dry vac, we waited for Mr Rooter to check it out. He augered the main drain and couldn't get past a slight blockage so recommended she get it cleaned out properly, which would be the next day. He used his camera to view the problem, and it was pretty bunged up. What a pain in the butt and the last thing you want to deal with after playing host all day long!

This weekend marks the first "big" trip away with Violet. We're going to Toronto for a wedding on Saturday night. I'm sure we won't stay for very long, but still.... she's still feeding every couple of hours, so I hope the other guests don't mind Marn hanging out for half the night!
Sunday then brings on another shower for Violet at Nancy and Drew/Candace and Dave's place. So it's going to be another busy weekend.
Also on Monday, Nancy and Drew finally get to move into their new place! We went to see it the other day and it's gorgeous! I can't wait until they are in and some normality settles back in to both households. It's chaos as it is now.

I haven't updated the blog in a few weeks. No real excuse, but I have been busy at home and work for the last couple of weeks. It's actually kind of nice that I'm busy at work, for a change. It's almost like all these (kind of large) projects came my way and now I'm trying to stay on top of it all, and trying to prioritize.
In my defence I've delegated the majority of Blog updates to Marnie, but she hasn't pulled through yet! She's only running on limited sleep and feedings every 3 hours. What's the problem?? :) *duck*
Violet is growing nicely, she's grown 2 inches since birth, we think (how can you really get a true measurement of a little squiggly, legs scrunched up munchkin?) We have her at 22.5 inches now and probably close to 10 lbs. I need to upload some recent pictures as she's really changing these days. Filling out too. Buddha belly and legs rolls are starting slowly. She's also starting to smile for real and mimic our face expressions, like tongue out - she sometimes doesn't quite get it, but she's trying and really studies your face at times. It's so cool and fun. She has a great smile so we're trying to capture a good one on film to post.
Her "poo face" is pretty funny too, so we'll have to get one of those also. It's a really concentrated look off into space with lips pursed together like a fishy face. We have a friend with a similar aged baby and she has the same face, so it's probably fairly universal, but still funny. She still has frequent "man toots" which also provide many moments of comic relief. Show me someone who can't laugh at the noises coming from that, and I'll show you someone who just can't appreciate the finer points in life!

I finished* shingling the roof of the shed last night. It stopped raining early afternoon and actually got nice enough to get out and do it, so I took the opportunity. The only thing left to do now is install the doors and windows, and create the steps/ramp - I probably won't get to the steps or double-door this year, so I'll likely board that up over the winter. Overall it's looking really good. There's just one wonky part of the roof, but if I don't show you where, you may not notice, so I'll just leave it at that...
* except for the peak and trimming the overhanging shingles around the edges - ran out of day light. 6:30pm darkness sucks.
I've created a Google online photo album for pics of violet, which is here. But you've seen most or all of these already taken by others (Krista Hall Jefferson) and posted on Facebook. We still haven't received the link or notification that our photo shoot is ready for viewing, but we'll update here with that link when we get it.
