We're going to be spending the week getting ready for Florida - Marn's parents leave on Wednesday, so we're going to have a bag packed for them to take down for us. This trip couldn't come at a better time with the crappy weather we've been having lately. Last Wednesday, we were hit with a huge snow storm and cold snap that still hasn't broken - there's still snow on the ground and it's routinely -10 c. The newspaper said that we (K-W/Cambridge) got more snow than anyone else in Ontario that day; 27 cm's!! Talk about winter not wanting to let go.... We're very much looking forward to spending some time in the sun and surf and then coming back to no snow on the ground! (please?)

Guess who has a tooth?

Desmond broke his first tooth on Saturday! Desmond's first tooth broke through on Saturday! The bottom right tooth is now peaking through. He's been "needy" (Marn's words) the last couple days before that, so maybe that's why? He has been drooling like crazy for a few weeks now, so we were expecting it any time. Marn says he broke his first tooth 2 weeks before Violet did (Violet did on the first morning of our visit with the Asbury's in BC, 2 years ago!)

Fun Weekend
We had a fun and relaxing, albeit busy, weekend. Saturday the whole family (Echo included) walked to uptown Waterloo (about a 15-20 minute walk) after breakfast to do a little shopping for dinner and pick up a few other things. It was a cold, but nice day. The kids were in our double Chariot and thankfully like to go in it. Desmond isn't really big enough for it yet, but we have a "sling" attachment for him. These also stay fairly warm in the cold weather as they block most of the wind. Echo garnered a lot of attention, like he always does and was fairly well behaved!
When we got home, it was nap time, and then after that Mom came over for a visit and fish dinner (Yes, Marn had some and is trying to like it!) Thankfully Violet really likes fish so far, so we're trying to get more of it into us. It was a nice visit and Violet really monopolized Mom's time... she played with her, read with her, Mom gave her a bath, brushed her teeth, put her to bed (or tried to)... Violet didn't want anything to do with her Mom or Dad, it was all about Grandma!
On Sunday morning we got up and headed out to Mountsburg Conservation area near Campbellville for a Maple Syrup Festival. Chris and Carey and family were meeting us there. Again, it was a nice and sunny day, but a little cold (which was good because if any warmer and it would have been very muddy!). We didn't take Echo this time. It wasn't as busy as we thought it would be which was great. They had Maple Sugar samples, demonstrations with a little bit of the history, sold pancakes, had a horse carriage ride through the sugar bush, as well as a Birds of Prey show. They only brought out a Turkey Vulture and an Owl, but I think in the summer time it's more of a show with other birds like Falcons, etc. There wasn't a ton of stuff to do, but it was really fun and wasn't very expensive. It was lower-key, there weren't huge lines and not a ton of people crowding around you... just our style! We found out during the horse ride that they don't sell maple syrup at all, 100% of the syrup that they make goes to the pancakes that they sell, so that's really their only source of income. She went on to say that they're not a big enough operation to sell it having only 400-500 trees. Big operations in the north, or in Quebec might have 20,000 to 40,000 trees!

When we got home and after late naps, we made Calzones for dinner, then Marn left for Book Club. Desmond went down for the night at 7:15 pm, and Violet and I watched a movie; Sleeping Beauty, her favourite! "It's just a little bit scary, but not really. It's just a movie". It's incredible how much she likes and mimics "princesses". When she dances to music she holds her dress (if wearing one which is often) out with one hand as she twirls around, just like Princess Aurora does, and she even says that she is, "just like Sleeping Beauty". It's too cute. If you're wondering why we started a movie so late (about 6:45 pm), it's because I didn't wake Violet up from her nap until about 5:30.... We had such a busy morning and she went down so late, that she NEEDED to have a decent sleep. She's an absolute different child when she skips her nap. It's very odd seeing her act out and being malicious towards us and Desmond, screaming and crying at the drop of a pin... it's really incredible. A complete 180° to her normal personality.

Our little back archer
I caught this little cutie pose today during his nap. I thought it was too cute to pass up.
small update
Here's a mini-update in words;
- basement is leaking from water run-off again. I think the eaves are the problem as they're not draining the water away from the house. So we're going to look into roofing and eaves this summer. Big damper on planning and budget as we were hoping to get a few more years out of it (knew that it would need replacing when we bought).
- had water dripping from the reno'd bathroom ceiling fan. It's still a mystery on where the water came from, but we suspect that blowing snow got into the vent pipe and melted? This happened in Baden as well.
- We're putting carpet in the basement, but now guessing on whether this is smart given the recent water leakage (again)... It's not being "installed" though so we can roll it up in case there is water again. We bought remnant carpet and under pad that will fill up most of the floor space, but not quite all. We did it mostly for the kids to play on and wasn't expensive.
- The house still has small on-going projects that we're trying to finish. Desmond's room, while "done", still needs trim - it's cut but not nailed on. Same as the bathroom. Fireplace still needs a few pieces around the hearth, and grout. I'm getting very frustrated with it all, because when I think we have time to do it, the kids just eat the days away and nothing gets done again.

Not much to report...
Andrew and I have been plugging away at the house. Andrew is working on installing surround speakers in the living room, ran into a little snag drilling one hole so we are at a standstill there. Hopefully that will be resolved tonight. I finally finished hemming the curtains yesterday and I am in love with them. Just a final press and they will be great (already are great and let's be honest, may not press them...ever). Here are a few photos of recent visits, etc...

Christmas 2010
Christmas was SO much fun this year with Violet. From the cookies and milk to the presents, it has opened our eyes to a whole new world of enjoyment.
A giant double stroller! Vi loves is, a lot of dollies and toys fit into it...and her new camera from the Asbury's fits into the carry compartment underneath! You never know when you might want to take a photo!
